Wave 3. The Recognition Wave.

Wave 3 is the wave the crowd finally recognizes. After W2 confirms what bears want to believe, W3 launches with surging volume and breaks above the W1 high. The narrative shifts. News reports become less dismissive. Late shorts get squeezed. FOMO buyers pile in. W3 is typically the longest and strongest wave of the impulse. The structural rule that defines it: W3 cannot be the shortest motive wave. This is the wave of conviction, momentum, and trend recognition.

1.618x W1 target 2.618x W1 target W3 commonly extends 1.618x to 2.618x of W1. Often the longest and most powerful wave of the impulse. SENTIMENT: CONFIDENCE - "The trend is your friend" - Bullish narrative gains ground - Sentiment surveys flip bullish - Fear & Greed Index rising During W3, sentiment shifts decisively bullish. The crowd that doubted W1 and shorted W2 now scrambles to reposition. "Stocks break out of bear territory" - early W3 breakout coverage "Is this the start of a new bull market?" - analysts begin to flip narrative "Strong rally surprises Wall Street" - mid-W3 institutional commentary News during W3 catches up to price. Headlines turn from skeptical to bullish. The narrative shift confirms the trend. W1+W2: thin participation W3: VOLUME SURGE = trend confirmed W3 has the strongest volume signature of the impulse. Heavy participation, breakouts, institutional buying drive the trend. SQUEEZE BUY FOMO CROWD BEHAVIOR: - W2 shorts get squeezed and cover - Trend-followers enter on breakout - FOMO retail chases into the move W3 squeezes bears, attracts trend-followers, draws in FOMO buyers. Volume confirms broad participation. W1 = 80 W3 = 255 (longest) W5 = 170 STRUCTURAL RULE: W3 cannot be the SHORTEST motive wave. W3 > min(W1, W5) - always. Here: 255 > 80 (W1) and 255 > 170 (W5) ✓ W3 cannot be the shortest motive wave. This is one of the three absolute rules of Elliott Wave - it never breaks.
